What to Do if Your Australian Student Visa Is Expiring Soon

A student visa expiry date is a firm immigration deadline. Finishing a course, waiting for results or planning another application does not automatically extend the visa. Students should check their exact status early and decide what they will do before the current visa ends.
The correct next step depends on course completion, future study, eligibility for another visa and any conditions attached to the present visa. Starting early gives time to collect records, obtain a new Confirmation of Enrolment, complete English testing or make travel arrangements.
Check the Exact Expiry Date in VEVO
Do not rely only on the date shown on a student card, calendar or course timetable. Use Visa Entitlement Verification Online, known as VEVO, to confirm the visa expiry date and current conditions. Keep a copy of the grant notice as well.
Course completion and visa expiry are different dates. A visa may allow a short period after study, but the actual grant details control the lawful stay. Time outside Australia does not pause or extend the visa.
Start Planning Several Months Early
Some pathways require documents that take weeks or months to arrange. These can include English results, skills assessments, police certificates, health checks, academic completion evidence or a new Confirmation of Enrolment. Waiting until the final week can remove otherwise sensible options.
Early Planning Checklist
- Check VEVO and the visa grant letter
- Confirm the official course completion date
- Request academic transcripts and completion evidence
- Review passport validity
- List any future study, work or family options
- Check whether a skills assessment or English test is needed
- Allow time for professional registration where relevant
- Prepare funds for charges, health cover and documents
Option One: Continue Studying
A student who genuinely wants further education may consider another Student Visa Subclass 500. The new course should make sense in light of previous study, employment and future goals. A lower level or unrelated course may need a clear and credible explanation.
The student generally needs a valid Confirmation of Enrolment and suitable Overseas Student Health Cover. Genuine Student answers, financial evidence, English evidence and other documents may be required according to the application.
Enrolling in a course does not itself create lawful status. The visa application must be validly lodged at the correct time, and restrictions may affect some applicants who are in Australia.
Option Two: Temporary Graduate Visa
Recent graduates may consider the Temporary Graduate Visa Subclass 485 if they meet the current stream requirements. Eligibility can depend on age, qualification, Australian study, English, health cover, timing and the applicant's recent visa history.
This pathway has changed several times, so older advice can be misleading. Confirm which stream applies and whether every requirement can be met before relying on it. Completion letters, transcripts and English results should be organised early.
Option Three: Skilled Migration
A graduate with an eligible occupation may explore points tested skilled visas. These commonly require a suitable skills assessment and an invitation through SkillSelect. State nomination or regional nomination may also be relevant.
Submitting an Expression of Interest does not grant a visa, extend a student visa or create a bridging visa. If an invitation is uncertain, the applicant needs a separate lawful plan for the approaching expiry date.
Option Four: Employer Sponsored Visa
An eligible employer may be able to nominate a worker for a temporary or permanent skilled visa. A job offer alone is not enough. The business, position, occupation, salary and applicant must meet the rules for the selected pathway.
Employer processes can take time and may involve labour market testing, nomination and supporting records. Discussing sponsorship shortly before expiry may leave insufficient time for a valid application.
Option Five: Partner or Family Visa
A person in a genuine relationship with an eligible Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen may consider a partner pathway. Relationship status alone does not guarantee eligibility. The couple must meet legal criteria and provide detailed evidence.
Location at lodgement, current visa conditions and previous immigration history can affect available options. Family visas should be considered because the relationship fits the law, not simply because another visa is expiring.
Option Six: Leave Australia Before Expiry
If no suitable onshore pathway is available, leaving before expiry protects lawful immigration history. Departure should be planned with enough time for flights, housing, employment and education arrangements.
A person may be able to apply for a different visa from outside Australia, depending on that visa's rules. Departure does not guarantee a future grant, but it avoids remaining unlawfully after the current visa ends.
Understand Bridging Visas
A bridging visa may be granted after a valid onshore visa application, but it usually becomes active only when the current substantive visa ends. Its conditions and travel rights must be checked carefully.
A Bridging Visa A does not normally allow a holder to return to Australia after departure. A separate Bridging Visa B may be needed before travel. Never assume a bridging visa exists merely because an online form was started or an Expression of Interest was submitted.
Check for a No Further Stay Condition
Some visas carry a condition that prevents many further visa applications while the holder is in Australia. VEVO and the grant notice show whether such a condition applies. A waiver is available only in limited circumstances and is not automatic.
Students with this condition should obtain advice early. Waiting until expiry to discover the restriction can create urgent and difficult choices.
If the Visa Has Already Expired
A person without a valid visa may be unlawful. They should act promptly and obtain suitable advice about resolving their status. In some circumstances, a Bridging Visa E may be relevant while arrangements are made, but it is not a general extension of student status.
Remaining unlawful can affect work rights, access to services, detention risk and future visa applications. Do not delay because of embarrassment or uncertainty.

Important Information
This article gives general information and is not an individual assessment. Visa availability, conditions and application rules can change. Check your status through VEVO and review the official guidance on moving between visas.

Final Thoughts
An expiring student visa needs early, practical action. First confirm the exact date and conditions through VEVO, then compare future study, graduate, skilled, employer and family pathways against your circumstances. Do not assume that course enrolment, an Expression of Interest or a job offer extends your stay. Prepare time sensitive documents well before the deadline and check whether any condition limits an onshore application. If no suitable visa is available, plan to leave Australia before expiry. Where the visa has already ended or the history is complex, seek appropriate guidance promptly. Protecting lawful status is more important than rushing into an unsuitable application.
